Working with us from anywhere in the country.

We take clients in every state. The work is the same, the person is the same, and the time we set aside for you is the same — the only thing that changes is that your documents arrive through a portal instead of across a desk.

On this page

Remote is not a separate service here, and it is not a lesser one. A good share of our existing clients travel, live part of the year elsewhere, or simply cannot get to the office in the middle of a working day. Working with them at a distance is how the practice already runs.

How it works

What does working remotely actually look like?

Nothing changes except the order of two steps. In person, you bring your documents to the appointment and we work through them together. Remotely, you upload them ahead of time, we prepare from what you sent, and then we meet — by video or by phone — to review the return with you before anything is filed. You still get a review appointment; you still see the return before it goes.

Certain days of the week are set aside for remote work only, so a remote client is not squeezed in between people in the waiting room. When it is your day, it is your day.

Signatures are electronic, through the portal. Payment is the same. The engagement letter, the written quote, the planning conversation — identical.

Documents

How do I get documents to you securely?

Through the client portal, which has messaging built in. Everything you upload is encrypted, stays in your file, and is visible to both of us in the same place. A photo from your phone is fine. A scan is better.

Please do not email tax documents.

A W-2, an investment statement, an agency notice — these carry Social Security numbers and account numbers, and ordinary email is not the place for them. We will not ask you to send them that way, and we would rather you did not offer.

If you prefer paper, fax works: 360-300-8949. If you prefer the post, ask and we will tell you the right way to do it.

Worth saying

Will I get the same attention as a client who walks in?

Yes, and it is the question remote clients ask most, so it deserves a straight answer rather than a reassuring one.

The time we dedicate to your return is the same whether you are across the desk or across the country. Think of the review appointment as a phone call or a coffee — it is the same conversation, held the same way, for the same length. Nobody here has a "remote queue" that moves slower. Both go into the same queue with the same priority.

The one honest difference is that we cannot read your face when we ask whether you have any other income. So we ask twice.

Where

Which states do you take clients in?

All of them. Multi-state returns are ordinary work for a firm on the Washington–Oregon line, and the same tools handle a client in Idaho, Texas, or Florida. If your situation involves a state with an unusual filing requirement, we will tell you at the introductory call rather than after you have signed.

Do we ever need to meet in person? No. Some clients like to, once, and they are welcome to. It has never been a requirement.

Who does the work

Who is actually preparing my return?

The person you speak with. All work is performed locally and in house, at our office in Vancouver, Washington. When you upload something, it is read here; when you have a question, it is answered here; when your return is prepared, it is prepared here, by the same person who then reviews it with you.

That is worth knowing when you are choosing a firm you will never visit. Distance changes where you sit. It does not change where the work is done.

Not local? That is fine.

A short introductory call works from any time zone.
